Cloud Cover Analysis Application

In the current study we present a cloud cover analysis application which is developed within the regional reanalysis efforts. This analysis system allows an optimal combination of data from various sources, namely the cloud cover products from polar-orbiting and geostationary satellites and the high-resolution NWP forecasts, taking into account their uncertainty. Pure variational technique is compared with the 2DEnVar-based approach where ensemble information is used to represent a scale-space dependent variability of cloud cover. This 2DEnVar system is used as an efficient pilot study for development of convective scale data assimilation for NWP purposes where a wide range of scales should be treated in a flow-dependent environment.
